Blog: Being Conservative

Statement

I'm tired of media reports about candidates being "too conservative" to win an election. What does that mean? Do they even know? And where are the media reports about candidates being "too liberal" to win?

Is it "too conservative" to seek tax rates which allow you to keep more, not less, of your own money? No Liberal has ever given me even a semi-plausible explanation as to how the government, taking more of my money, is supposed to make me more financially secure.

Is it "too conservative" to ask that my decisions, about my healthcare, are made by me? What do voters think the growing number of boards of government bureaucrats (IPAB, MedPac) are there for? They are there to slowly siphon off control of your decision making authority with regard to the most important life and death decisions you will ever make. When these boards start making decisions about procedures, and what they will or will not "pay for", it's you that will suffer, not them.

Is it "too conservative" to support an immigration process that asks immigrants to abide by the law? My wife did it when she earned her citizenship. It's a difficult process, but that doesn't give anyone the right to disregard it. Signing up for Obamacare is a difficult process too, but I don't hear any administration officials suggesting that we ignore Obamacare.

Finally, is it "too conservative" to support school choice initiatives? Why are parents in struggling school districts forced to work long hours to pay their tax dollars into a system which is, in some cases, providing their children with a substandard education? Is it too much to ask to allow these children to have access to the future we all take for granted?

Remember, although many in the media were well aware of the ideological underpinnings of the current administration, there were almost no reports of President Obama being "too liberal" to win the election. Don't fall for this cynical, media driven shell-game. When it comes to issues, not cheap rhetoric, the solutions are ours.
